Remember Maria aka Julie Andrews singing ‘Raindrops on Roses’ in Sound of Music, where she lists some of her favourite things? I sing too – only my version is more about Snot-filled Noses and other of my least favourite things when it comes to parenting.

Frequent night-wakings and six am mornings
Poonamis that happen without any warnings
The coughs and sniffles that winter brings
These are a few of my least favourite things…

Food that’s prepared then gets tossed on the floor
Wheels-on-the-bus which is now quite a bore
The books and toys which my toddler flings
These are a few of my least favourite things…

Spit-ups and accidents concerning pee
Leftover food and cold bloody tea
Sometimes motherhood jolly well stings
These are a few of my least favourite things…

When I co-sleep
and get no sleep
When I’m exhausted
I simply remember my bottle of wine
and then I’m temporarily fine!

Tantrums and refusals to come to bed
‘Have you even heard anything I just said?’
24-7 saying the same things
These are a few of my least favourite things…

Changing nappies and cleaning bums
Listening to baby banging the toy drum
Cleaning and mopping and all that washing
These are a few of my least favourite things…

Fusses and demands and no effing reason
Fake promises that amount to treason
Every single day I am still learning
That these are a few of my least favourite things…

When the darned lego gets stepped on again
When I’m in immense pain
When I’m all worn out
I simply remember my toddler’s cute face
And then it’s not all such a disgrace!!!
